What is Visible Groundwater?

A community-driven project to document the places where groundwater, or its surface effects, can be directly observed. We are developing this resource to support educators, students, and the wider public by making groundwater more visible, accessible, and relatable.

The Hidden Resource

Groundwater makes up over 98% of all available freshwater on Earth, yet because it's hidden underground, most people rarely think about it. Groundwater matters, it provides drinking water, enables agriculture and industry, and powers complex ecosystems. Groundwater does not have to be invisible, we can see it in springs, through boreholes and wells, in seeps along roads and tunnels, and in many other ways. Here we are mapping the places where the invisible becomes visible.

Why Map It?

By mapping the places where groundwater can be seen, we are building a high-quality data-set to support outreach and education. Whether you're a hydrogeologist, a student, or simply someone who's noticed a spring in your local park, your observation matters. Together we can create a tool to help communities support sustainable water management and inspire the next generation of hydrogeologists.
